Urban Adventures
Here's what one weekend in the Big Apple revealed to Ms. Beyer's sixth grade class at the Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury, Vermont.
"I live in Vermont, so it was very exciting for me to see everything in New York
City. One of my favorite parts was the ferry that went past the Statue of Liberty.
I thought that F.A.O. Schwartz was great. I liked to look down on the city from very
tall buildings like the World Trade Center. I really liked New York City and think
that everyone should go there someday."
- Arianna Bailey
"When my class went to New York City we took numerous subways which was an experience
for Vermonters because Vermont doesn't have any subways. New York's subway system is
unsanitary and unsafe and they are usually crowded. The homeless people of New York will
sometimes ride on the subways all day. The ferry ride was windy and crowded, but we had
a great view of the Statue of Liberty. By the end of the day, we were exhausted and
our feet were aching, but we had experienced NYC's culture."
- Amy Mincher
"We visited many fascinating buildings, but one that will always stay in our minds is
F.A.O. Schwartz. The size of the toy store overwhelmed us! We loved the giant clock
playing "It's a Small World" as we walked in the door. Everywhere you looked there were
stuffed animals, and some of them did tricks, flips, walking, talking, etc. Everything,
including the prices are big!"
- AddieRose Mayer & Daurie Mangan-Dimuzio
"New York was full of wonderful sights, sounds, and colors. Actually being in New York
was like being lost in a giant candy store. There are so many things to choose from, you
can do things, see things, and eat things. I especially liked the view of the Twin
Towers from the Empire State Building because there was a good view of the river,
the Statue of Liberty, and some cool buildings."
- Beecher T. Smith-Stackhouse
"To get from place to place, we had to take a lot of subways. Once we took the
wrong one and ended up on Roosevelt Island. So we lost a lot of time and didn't
have time to go to any museums. We did go on the ferry that took us to see the
Statue of Liberty. We walked down Fifth Avenue and went by the Plaza Hotel. I
think New York is fun and exciting, I had the time of my life."
- Laura Lopez
"I liked going on top of the Empire State Building because it was high up. You could
see all the cars, they looked like little matchbox cars but acted like baby ants. It
was fun to look down and see the top of other buildings and to know you are higher up
than anyone in that building and everyone on the road. Being on top of the Empire State
Building was almost like looking out of an airplane, but you are not as high up and
you are not moving the same way as you would in an airplane! One of the other things
I liked was riding on the subway and the train. That was really fun!"
- Karly LaFayette
"One of the things that I liked best about New York City was the Twin Towers.
It was fun when we went to the top. You could see everything! We looked down on a
plane. On the roof you feel great because you are one of the highest people in New
York."
- Chad Bolduc
"There's plenty more to see and an adventure around every corner, but the only way
to see the rest is if you go there."
- Patrick Collins
