Pogs, Pens & Keychains
Lowell Bunion, age 10, from Newark, collects a wide variety of items including whistles, keychains, Lego blocks, computer games, toys, marbles, and they keychains he exhibited at the "I Love to Collect" exhibit. Computer games are his favorite "because some of them are very fun and have great graphics." Lowell's stance on collecting is quite honest, "Actually, I don't enjoy collecting, the numbers just build on their own."
Shu Yu Zhang, age 10, from Kearny, exhibited her keychains and coins. She had to really select just the best of her collections of stamps, posters, books, jewelry, string, toy animals, clothes from around the world, and lunch bags. Her collections are "very cute, cool, and I love the way they look and that they are useful." She enjoys collecting because it's fun and easy and almost free. And it makes me happy."
Michael Chavis, age 9, from Hillside, saves baseball cards, baseballs, Pogs and coins, especially pennies. Michael exhibited some of his Pogs, especially the "cool Airborn and Number 8 pogs." His dream collections include famous buildings, paintings, mansions, and trees. He says about collecting, "I like learning about it and playing with it."
Mykel Hargrove, age 10, from Newark, has many pens and pencils in his collection and treasures his Denver Bronco and Atlanta Hawks writig implements. He also saves books and loves ones like Jurassic Park "because they help you learn." When Mykel "gets older I will give them to his children." He enjoys readinga nd taking care of his collection."
Elijah Morgan, age 10, from Newark, collects Pogs "because they make me happy." His favorite Pogs are the "Slammers," or the larger Pogs with which you hit the others. Elijah likes to play with them because they are "Phat!".
Erin Rivers, age 12, from Newark, has about 100 different pens and pencils. She has amassed, among other things, thirty two dolls, two violins, and lots of earrings she has collected since she was a baby. The best piece of her pen collection is the Talk Girl Pen - "if you talk into the pen, it will say it back." Erin feels that "my collections are special because when I collect things it gives me time to find out about different things."
